Seleda 47M

by Frank Stevenson2 May 2022 in Sailyachts, no comment

One of Turkey’s leading shipyards, Mengi Yay. He brought the 47-meter Seleda together with water in Istanbul. Inspired by classical wooden gulets, Seleda offers a brand new sailing experience.

Turkish yacht builder Mengi Yay has been producing at its shipyard in Tuzla for 66 years. The shipyard, which has brought more than 200 projects together with water to date, is mostly known for its motor yachts between 30-45 meters.

After the 44-meter Vitrus and 45-meter award-winning projects Aquarius, the successful shipyard surprises us this time with the 47-meter Seleda. This project draws attention both as the biggest boat of the shipyard and as one of the few sailing projects in its fleet.

While explaining this surprise, Ramazan Mengi uses the following words: “Even though we realize more motor yacht projects, this does not limit us. Mengi Yay is a private or semi-custom production shipyard. In line with the wishes and dreams of our customers, we have different types from trawler to sailboat, from gulet to explorer.

We can produce projects in different models. This reflects the flexibility of our shipyard and its understanding of adaptation that does not compromise on quality.”

OUTDOOR PLEASURE

The main deck is planned as a pleasure area with very large indoor and outdoor living spaces. Inside, the dining area for 10 people, the TV and the sitting area are refreshing with glass facades meeting the view.

In the cockpit, there is a comfortable sitting area and a large dining area that brings all the guests together. The cavalry ladder on the starboard side is another striking feature of the boat and the Mengi Yay Yachting design.

Flybridge, on the other hand, stands out as an area that increases the pleasure of meeting with the sun. In addition to sun loungers and large seating areas, the kitchenette and bar area facilitate service. There are two different control and helm areas on the flybridge and the main deck.

COMFORT ON THREE DECKS

Reaching a length of 47.30 meters with its three-meter walking stick, Seleda is 9.45 meters wide. With its wooden laminated construction, it reveals the mastery of wooden yacht construction of Mengi Yay shipyard.

Seleda welcomes its guests with its spacious lounge on the main deck. It offers a spacious living space with a master and four guest cabins on the lower deck. Each of the guest cabins draws attention with their own private bathroom areas.

The master cabin is spread across the width of the hull at the bow of the lower deck, meeting the comfort needs of the boat owners with dressing, resting and bathing areas.

POWERFUL SAIL EQUIPMENT

Mengi Yay Business Development Manager Erdinç Kuşçu explains the subtleties of sailboat design as follows: “The design of the sailboat involves more struggle than other projects.

The selection, design, production and assembly processes of masts, sails and rigging equipment that are not found in motor yachts while sailing require a lot of knowledge and experience.

Predicting the environment, wind and sea conditions that the boat will encounter while sailing requires the appropriate boat design. This means that we should be more careful during the design phase.” At the shipyard, the production of another 42-meter steel hull and aluminum superstructure is currently underway.

Seleda is a sailboat that is specially designed for its owner and makes a difference with its powerful sailing equipment. In the two-masted sailboat, the mainsail area is 308 square meters, the mizana sail is 169 square meters, the genoa sail is 361 square meters and the staysail is 194 square meters.

It has a total sailing area of 1,032 square meters. In the sailing course for the test, it had a wind speed of 19.7 knots, and when all sails were opened, the boat banked 16 degrees and reached a speed of 10 knots.

Designed entirely in line with the dreams and needs of its owner, Seleda also draws attention with its technical features. Equipped with twin CAT 671 horsepower engines, the 260-ton sailboat can reach 12 knots when the engines are running. Its economic cruise speed is 10 knots.
