This design is undoubtedly a radical step for the company. The current Sun Fast 3200 and 3600 models are fast-paced but relatively conservative and easy to use, achieving successive successes, with deck layouts similar to most performance cruisers.
On the other hand, the more sophisticated new boat’s mainland collar underwire with moving stern, reflects the high standard of sailing teams, usually with a small number of people. Antoine Chancelier, Jeanneau’s sailboat product director, says, “Sun Fast owners may not be professional sailors, but they have the knowledge and capacity to use the boat as a professional.”
All the features of the boat, including the new hull form, even more radical than the coat of arms, are optimized for IRC. The boat is a joint product of Daniel Andrieu and Guillaume Verdier of VPLP; Verdier brought new ideas to the IRC. In the underwater profile, the concave sections in the front of the keel help the boat to walk, while the width is maintained far forward. Another concave part behind the release is designed to minimize the wet surface area in light weather.
The IRC rating of the boat will be around 1015, depending on the options and sailing option ordered. The CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis of the 3300 shows that the new boat has a similar speed in light weather but becomes faster as the wind increases. A wider rigging has also been developed for the North American market. This is optimized for races where it is important to maximize speed at wind less than 15 knots.
Jeanneau received 16 orders within six weeks of last year’s launch. Three of the first boats will be delivered to the UK and have registered for the Rolex Fastnet Race.
