by Without the original Swan 65, Nautor’s Swan would probably never be as famous as it is today. In the first Whitbread World Tour Race held in 1973/1974, the victory of Sayula II earned the Finnish boat builder a high reputation.
Therefore, it is of historical importance to call a new model the Swan 65. Although Nautor’s latest model does not aim to win a world tour race, the original S&S design is designed as a racing boat with the same spirit as the 65. When Sayula II was built in 1972, it was the largest fiberglass boat on the market. The brand had come to this point even though it was 36ft, the first boat it had produced a few years ago. With an additional 4m along the waterline, an extra width at the stern, and significantly higher boards, today’s Swan 65 is much larger than its predecessor. But as an indication of timeliness, Nautor has a modest paint in his current series, which stretches twice as much. The volume, hull and deck designs initially reflect the demands of sailors who are looking for sailor ocean racers but are now looking for comfortable, large-volume cruising boats that can occasionally enter races.
The Swan is on the increasingly crowded list of boats over 60ft, designed by 65 Frers to capture widespread appeal and still aim to be the largest owner-managed boat. However, the model offers excellent usability and is capable of racing as well as cruising in the Mediterranean and oceans, and a real crew cabin can be selected in the layout of the model.
Take the Dutch owners of this first boat; Experienced sailors who have in the past owned a ClubSwan 45 and a Swan 601. Even though they will compete in the Middle Sea Race, they first asked for a large boat for long-distance cruising with limited crew and will work with a part-time captain for the maintenance of the boat. They chose the HAM carbon rigging options for the boat with APM telescopic release and in-boom winding system. Nautor opted for a fiberglass hull for better sound insulation on a cruise boat. It has a modern hull and deck design and is quite striking in its large dimensions, especially the width of the top and the top.
